""The Great Hunger"" is a novel written by Norwegian author Johan Bojer, first published in 1921. The story is set in the late 19th century in a small fishing village on the coast of Norway. The main character, Oyvind, is a young man who dreams of a better life and falls in love with a girl named Synnove. However, their love is tested by the harsh realities of life in the village, including poverty, social class differences, and the devastating effects of a famine that strikes the region. As the hunger worsens, Oyvind must decide whether to follow his dreams or stay and help his community survive the crisis. The novel is a powerful portrayal of the struggles and sacrifices of ordinary people in the face of hardship, and a poignant exploration of the themes of love, loyalty, and the human spirit.Ah! till now your mind has been so filled with cold mechanics, with calculations, with steel and fire. More and more knowledge, ever more striving to understand all things, to know all, to master all. But meanwhile, the tones of the hymn died within you, and the hunger for that which lies beyond all things grew ever fiercer and fiercer. You thought it was Norway that you needed--and now you are here. But is it enough? This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
