The Legend of Good Women is a poem written by Geoffrey Chaucer, a renowned English poet, in the 14th century. The poem is a collection of stories about virtuous women from history and mythology who were wronged by men but remained loyal to their lovers or husbands. The poem begins with Chaucer's apology to women for his previous works that were critical of them, and it is followed by a prologue in which the narrator meets the goddess of love, Venus, and is commanded to write about the good women who were wronged by men. The poem consists of nine legends, each featuring a different woman, including Cleopatra, Dido, Lucrece, and Criseyde, among others. The women in the legends are depicted as loyal, virtuous, and pious, and their stories are told with a moral lesson. Chaucer's language in The Legend of Good Women is vivid and descriptive, and he uses various poetic devices such as alliteration, rhyme, and symbolism to enhance the beauty of his work. The poem is considered a masterpiece of medieval literature and is admired for its portrayal of women as strong and virtuous characters.Cleopatra, Thisbe, Dido and more. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
