Malvina of Brittany is a historical novel written by Jerome K. Jerome, first published in 1893. The story is set in the 11th century and follows the life of Malvina, a young woman who is forced to flee her homeland of Brittany after her father is killed by the invading Normans.Malvina is taken in by a group of monks who teach her the ways of healing and herbalism. She becomes skilled in these arts and eventually gains a reputation as a healer. However, her peaceful existence is disrupted when she is captured by the Normans and forced to become a servant in the household of the brutal Baron de Montfort.Despite the hardships she faces, Malvina remains determined to escape and return to her homeland. Along the way, she meets a young Norman nobleman named Raoul, who becomes her ally and eventually her love interest. The novel is a tale of adventure, romance, and political intrigue set against the backdrop of medieval Europe. It explores themes of identity, loyalty, and the struggle for freedom in a time of war and turmoil. Overall, Malvina of Brittany is a compelling historical novel that offers a vivid and engaging portrait of a fascinating period in European history.Malvina appears to have been interested in watching what she probably regarded as some novel breed of dragon being nourished from tins extricated from under her feet, but to have accepted this, together with all other details of the flight, as in the natural scheme of things. The monster refreshed, tugged, spurned the ground, and rose again with a roar; and the creeping sea rushed down. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
