The Provost is a novel written by Scottish author John Galt. It was first published in 1822 and is considered one of Galt's most significant works. The story is set in the fictional Scottish town of Irvine and follows the life of a local provost named William Pawkie. Pawkie is a cunning and ambitious man who uses his position of power to further his own interests and those of his family. The novel explores themes of corruption, greed, and the struggle for power in a small community. The characters in the book are vividly drawn and the dialogue is written in a Scottish dialect, adding to the authenticity of the story. The Provost is a satirical and humorous work that provides a glimpse into Scottish society in the early 19th century.I reflected the while of a minute before I made any reply, and then I said-- ""I would hae na doubt of the matter, Mr. M'Lucre, could it be brought about to get you chosen for the delegate; but I fear, as ye are only Dean of Guild this year, that's no to be accomplished; and really, without the like of you, our borough, in the contest, may be driven to the wall.""This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
