The Secret Sharer is a novella by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1910. The story follows an unnamed captain of a ship who is struggling to gain the respect and trust of his crew. One night, he discovers a naked man clinging to the side of the ship and decides to take him on board. The man, named Leggatt, reveals that he has killed a fellow crew member on his previous ship and is now on the run. The captain agrees to hide Leggatt in his cabin and helps him escape to shore. Throughout the story, the captain wrestles with his own morality and sense of duty to his crew versus his loyalty to Leggatt. He also struggles to maintain his authority as captain while keeping this secret from his crew. The theme of duality is prevalent throughout the novella, as the captain sees himself reflected in Leggatt and grapples with his own inner conflicts. The Secret Sharer is considered a masterpiece of psychological fiction, exploring themes of identity, morality, and the human psyche. It is often studied in literature courses and is highly regarded for its rich symbolism and complex characters.while I lingered yet, my hand resting lightly on my ship's rail as if on the shoulder of a trusted friend. But, with all that multitude of celestial bodies staring down at one, the comfort of quiet communion with her was gone for good. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
