The Surgeon's Daughter is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, first published in 1827. The story is set in the late 18th century and revolves around the lives of two young lovers, George Staunton and Miss Clara Mowbray. George is the son of a wealthy merchant and Clara is the daughter of a respected surgeon. Despite their different backgrounds, the two fall in love and plan to marry. However, their plans are thwarted by Clara's father, who disapproves of the match and arranges for her to marry another man.The novel is set against the backdrop of the Jacobite rebellion of 1745, and features a cast of colorful characters, including a group of Highlanders, a band of smugglers, and a mysterious foreigner known only as ""the Doctor."" The story is full of adventure, romance, and suspense, as George and Clara struggle to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of their happiness.Scott's writing is known for its vivid descriptions of Scottish landscapes and customs, and The Surgeon's Daughter is no exception. The novel is a compelling portrait of life in 18th-century Scotland, and a testament to Scott's skill as a storyteller.""A Feringi can then refuse gold?"" said the Fakir. ""I thought they took it from every hand, whether pure as that of an Houri, or leprous like Gehazi's--even as the hungry dog recketh not whether the flesh he eateth be of the camel of the prophet Saleth, or of the ass of Degial--on whose head be curses!""This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
