Troilus and Criseyde is a medieval romance written by Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century. The story is set during the Trojan War and follows the love affair between Troilus, a Trojan prince, and Criseyde, a widow who is forced to leave Troy and return to Greece. The poem is divided into five books and is written in Middle English.The first book introduces the characters and sets the scene in Troy. Troilus falls in love with Criseyde and seeks the help of his friend Pandarus to win her over. Troilus is devastated by her departure and becomes increasingly bitter towards the Trojan War. The final book sees Troilus attempt to win Criseyde back, but ultimately fail. The poem ends with Troilus' death in battle.Troilus and Criseyde is considered one of Chaucer's greatest works and is praised for its complex characters and exploration of love and loss.
