Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland is a novel written by Olive Schreiner, first published in 1897. The story is set in southern Africa during the late 19th century, at a time when European powers were competing for control of the continent. The protagonist, Peter Halket, is a young Englishman who travels to Mashonaland (now Zimbabwe) to fight for the British South Africa Company against the indigenous Shona people. As Peter becomes more involved in the conflict, he begins to question the morality of his actions and the motives of the company he is fighting for. He also develops a close relationship with a Shona woman named Nyasha, which further complicates his sense of loyalty and duty. The novel explores themes of imperialism, racism, and the clash of cultures between Europeans and Africans. It also offers a critique of the British South Africa Company and its exploitation of the African continent. Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland is considered an important work of South African literature and a significant contribution to the anti-colonial movement. It has been praised for its vivid descriptions of the African landscape and its sympathetic portrayal of African characters.Since eight in the morning he had wandered among long grasses, and ironstone kopjes, and stunted bush, and had come upon no sign of human habitation, but the remains of a burnt kraal, and a down-trampled and now uncultivated mealie field, where a month before the Chartered Company's forces had destroyed a native settlement. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
