""Under The Greenwood Tree Or The Mellstock Quire"" is a novel written by Thomas Hardy. It is set in the fictional village of Mellstock in the rural county of Wessex, England. The story revolves around the Mellstock church choir, known as the ""quire"", and their new organist, Dick Dewy. The novel explores the romantic relationships between Dick and the beautiful schoolmistress, Fancy Day, as well as the various members of the quire and their love interests. The book is a celebration of the simple rural life and the traditions of the English countryside. It highlights the importance of music and community in the lives of the villagers. The novel also touches on themes of social change and the impact of modernization on traditional ways of life. Overall, ""Under The Greenwood Tree Or The Mellstock Quire"" is a charming and heartwarming novel that captures the essence of rural England in the 19th century. It is a must-read for fans of classic literature and those interested in the history and culture of rural England.William Dewy--otherwise grandfather William--was now about seventy; yet an ardent vitality still preserved a warm and roughened bloom upon his face, which reminded gardeners of the sunny side of a ripe ribstone-pippin; though a narrow strip of forehead, that was protected from the weather by lying above the line of his hat-brim, seemed to belong to some town man, so gentlemanly was its whiteness. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
