Alcestis is a play written by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides. The story revolves around King Admetus of Thessaly, who is granted a wish by the god Apollo. Admetus chooses to have his life spared when it is time for him to die. However, he soon realizes that this comes at a cost - someone else must die in his place. His loyal wife, Alcestis, volunteers to take his place and dies in his stead. The play explores themes of sacrifice, loyalty, and the power of love. It also delves into the concept of mortality and the lengths people will go to in order to avoid death. The character of Alcestis is portrayed as a selfless and devoted wife who is willing to give up her own life for her husband's. Admetus, on the other hand, is shown to be conflicted and guilt-ridden over his wife's sacrifice. The play is notable for its use of the chorus, a group of actors who comment on the action and provide insight into the characters' thoughts and motivations. It also features elements of Greek mythology, including the presence of the god Apollo and the depiction of the underworld.Overall, Alcestis is a tragic play that explores complex themes and raises thought-provoking questions about life, death, and the nature of love and sacrifice.Translated Into English Rhyming Verse With Explanatory Notes By Gilbert Murray. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
