Wives and Daughters is a novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell and published in 1865. It tells the story of Molly Gibson, the daughter of a widowed country doctor. When her father remarries, Molly gains a stepsister, Cynthia, who is beautiful and charming but also selfish and manipulative. As Molly grows up, she becomes friends with Roger Hamley, the son of a wealthy landowner. They develop a close relationship, but their feelings for each other are complicated by Cynthia's interference and the social barriers between them. The novel explores themes of love, class, and gender roles in Victorian England. It also portrays the complexities of family relationships and the challenges faced by women in a patriarchal society.Wives and Daughters is considered one of Gaskell's most accomplished works and is praised for its nuanced characters, richly detailed setting, and insightful commentary on social issues. It has been adapted for film and television several times, including a 1999 BBC miniseries.Miss Eyre listened in silence, perplexed but determined to be obedient to the directions of the doctor, whose kindness she and her family had good cause to know. She made strong tea; she helped the young men liberally in Mr Gibson's absence, as well as in his presence, and she found the way to unloosen their tongues, whenever their master was away, by talking to them on trivial subjects in her pleasant homely way. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
