The Return of the Soldier is a novel written by Rebecca West, first published in 1918. The story is set during World War I and revolves around the return of a soldier named Chris Baldry from the front lines. Chris has been suffering from amnesia and cannot remember anything about his life before the war. He believes that he is still a young man, unmarried and without any responsibilities.Upon his return, Chris is reunited with his wife, Kitty, and his cousin, Jenny. However, he does not recognize Kitty and is drawn to Jenny, whom he remembers as a childhood sweetheart. As Chris struggles to regain his memory, the three women in his life must come to terms with their own feelings and desires. The novel explores themes of memory, love, and the effects of war on individuals and society. It is a powerful portrayal of the psychological impact of war on soldiers and their families, as well as a commentary on the changing roles of women in society.Rebecca West's writing style is both poetic and precise, and her characters are complex and nuanced. The novel is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
