The Tobacco Tiller: A Tale Of The Kentucky Tobacco Field is a novel written by Sarah Bell Hackley and published in 1909. The story is set in rural Kentucky and follows the life of a young man named Judd Rankin, who works as a tobacco farmer. Judd is a hardworking and honest man who is determined to provide for his family and make a success of his farm. However, he faces many challenges, including harsh weather conditions, poor soil quality, and competition from other farmers. As Judd struggles to make ends meet, he also finds himself caught up in a love triangle between two women - his childhood sweetheart, Mary, and a wealthy city girl named Nellie. Judd must navigate his feelings for both women while also dealing with the pressures of running a successful tobacco farm. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, hard work, and the struggles of rural life in the early 20th century. It provides a vivid depiction of the tobacco farming industry in Kentucky, including the backbreaking work of planting, tending, and harvesting the crop.
