First published in 1883, Under Drake's Flag is G. A. Henty's historical adventure set during the age of Elizabethan exploration and maritime conflict. The novel follows a young English protagonist who joins the expeditions associated with Sir Francis Drake during the late sixteenth century. Through sea voyages, naval encounters, and journeys to the Spanish Main, Henty weaves fictional narrative into the broader historical rivalry between England and Spain. The story introduces readers to key episodes of Elizabethan maritime history while maintaining the forward momentum characteristic of Henty's adventure fiction. Written for younger audiences, the work reflects the late Victorian tradition of historical novels designed to combine instruction with narrative excitement. As in many of Henty's works, themes of perseverance, courage, and personal responsibility are set against carefully researched historical backdrops. Under Drake's Flag remains representative of nineteenth-century juvenile historical fiction and continues to be included in studies of classical adventure literature. This volume stands among Henty's numerous historical novels, alongside works such as With Lee in Virginia, In Freedom's Cause, and The Cat of Bubastes, all of which present formative episodes of world history through accessible narrative.
