Broken Empire 1. Prince of Thorns

Ich bin noch nicht komplett durch mit dem Buch, es fehlt noch etwa 1/3, aber soweit gefällt es mir ganz gut. Ich würde mir nur mehr Hintergrundwissen wünschen und mehr zum Worldbuilding. Die Charaktere sind auch toll. Der Konflikt ist ganz unterhaltsam. Das Buch hat es auch geschafft mich zu fesseln, also dieses Gefühl von "Ich muss unbedingt wissen wie es weiter geht".

"Prince of Thorns" is the start of the trilogie of the "Broken Empire". I'd say, it's one of the best books i've read so far. My judge on this is a bit dependent on my "cracving" to read on - and that's really strong here! The fundamental storyline isn't an innovation but a somewhat simple "Vengeance-Story". Here is what this book makes so great for me: It's fast paced and you never get the feeling of an "sagging". It's fluidly tight woven with storyline and with some jumps in time (back and forth). The protagonist Jorg is not exactly a nice person. In fact he's a sick mind and don't gives a sh** about moral and manners. Feel free to despise him. Somehow i like him despite all his psychopathic beeing, it's just fiction after all. Some parts of his personality also get some explanation later on... 0,5 Stars Reduction because of the rather standard Story base theme. If you can live with this and a lot of bad and worse bloody situations ... give it a shot!

Achtung, Spoiler! Der Protagonist ist nicht konsistent geschrieben, mal soll er das pure böse darstellen, der psychische Folter anwendet, plötzlich hat er Gewissensbisse wegen Kleinigkeiten. Er soll wohl intelligent und gebildet erscheinen, aber es bleibt völlig ungeklärt, warum fast alles an Wissen verloren gegangen ist, aber klassische griechische Philosophen erhalten geblieben sind. Die Motivation der Figur geht über "Der hat meine Mutter und Bruder umgebracht und weil mein Vater sie nicht gerecht hat, bin ich sauer" nicht hinaus. Die Nebencharaktere sind nicht viel mehr als zweidimensionale Pappkameraden, die keinerlei Tiefgang haben. Zwischendurch sterben einige davon und sie fehlen überhaupt nicht. Selbst der einzige "Vertraute" des Protagonisten, der ein wenig als Vaterfigur aufgebaut wird, fehlt kein bisschen. Einzig das Worldbuilding könnte interessant sein, aber davon passiert viel zu wenig, als dass es das Buch ernsthaft retten könnte.
