Ovid's The Metamorphoses is one of the foundational works of classical mythology, weaving more than two hundred mythic tales into a continuous epic of transformation. Composed in Latin in the early first century CE, the poem traces a sweeping arc from the creation of the world to the deification of Julius Caesar. Along the way Ovid recounts the stories of gods and mortals whose lives are altered by love, jealousy, ambition, vengeance, and divine intervention. The unifying theme of change-human into animal, stone into flesh, grief into constellations-binds the episodes into a fluid and imaginative narrative unlike any other work of antiquity. Drawing on Greek myth while reshaping it with wit, irony, and psychological insight, The Metamorphoses exerted profound influence on medieval and Renaissance literature, including the works of Dante, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. Its stories remain central to the Western mythological tradition and continue to inform art, literature, and cultural imagination.
