In talking about 'humanistic educational ideals', one often associates an end or a value in itself. Even against the backdrop of the current trend toward an increasing economization of education and knowledge, this usually implies that education and economy should ideally be held separate, education should be exempt from the laws of commodity exchange and the market. The question of the value of knowledge has characterized the humanist project from its beginnings in the early modern period. It is the humanists who make knowledge the object and medium of authorization and professionalization; for them, therefore, it is a matter of determining its value 'in itself', while at the same time this value is understood in its dependence on its pragmatic contexts. Thus, the economies of the symbolic are problematic even beyond the material sphere of the exchange of goods, which concerns not only questions of the acquisition and 'marketing' of humanistic knowledge, but also textual practices of the appropriation, expropriation and reappropriation of ancient traditions. The exchange processes between knowledge, power and economy presented in the essays in this volume characterize symbolic and cultural processes far beyond the early modern period.
