Kindred A Graphic Novel Adaptation

“The ease. Us, the children... I never realized how easily people could be trained to accept slavery.” This novel utterly captivated me from the very first sentence up until the last. The descriptions of the lives of the enslaved people on the plantation were harrowing; Dana’s struggles to stay alive in a time when she suddenly had no rights were heartbreaking. Both the characters and the plot were crafted so well, it was incredibly easy to get drawn into the story. It was frightening to read about how quickly people can acclimatize themselves to circumstances of discrimination and violence, as the protagonist herself states at one point in the story. This was an evocative, thought-provoking read that I will keep thinking about. Octavia E. Butler is one of the greatest, most beloved American writers for good reason.

Dieses Buch ist ein absolutes Meisterwerk und es existiert einfach nicht mehr in deutscher Übersetzung?? Es ist 1976. Dana ist eine junge, schwarze Frau und noch nicht lange mit ihrem weißen Mann verheiratet. Das ist damals gesellschaftlich sicher nicht einfach, aber alles wird viel, viel schlimmer, als Dana plötzlich durch eine spontane Zeitreise in das Jahr 1815 versetzt wird. Durch die Perspektive dieser Frau bekommen wir nun die unterschiedlichen Lebenssituationen vor Augen gehalten. Das ist unglaublich intensiv und trotzdem so zärtlich und nachvollziehbar. Denn selbst als freie Frau hat Dana zu diesem Zeitpunkt im US-amerikanischen Süden keine Rechte und muss das Leben als Sklavin miterleben. Die Zeitreise an sich muss dabei gar nicht groß erklärt werden, sie fügt sich nahtlos in die Geschichte ein. Das Besondere am Buch ist tatsächlich die ungewöhnliche Perspektive. Und Octavia E. Butler schreibt so gut, dass man komplett mitgenommen wird. Lest das!

Dana's Geschichte beginnt spanned, eine Spannung welche sich durch das ganze Buch konstant hält. Mir aus heutiger Sicht Dana und Kevins Leben in den 70er- dann in 1817, vorzustellen....the amount of resilience it takes to stay sane in a time like this, amazingly captured by the author. Sehr empfehlenswert!

Combing the aspect of time travelling with a story about slavery is certainly a daring approach. The author manages to tell a very moving, unsettling as well as enlightening story. I loved every page.
