Not George Washington is a comic novel of literary ambition, misadventure, and social satire, following the efforts of a young writer navigating the uncertain world of publishing and reputation. Told through a lively and often self-aware narrative voice, the story traces the rise and fall of its protagonist as he attempts to establish himself in literary society, only to encounter a series of humorous setbacks and complications.
Blending satire with farce, Wodehouse and Westbrook draw on their own early experiences in journalism and writing, creating a work that reflects both the aspirations and absurdities of literary life. The novel offers a portrait of ambition tempered by reality, where success proves elusive and circumstance often intervenes in unexpected ways.
Not George Washington stands as an early example of Wodehouse's comic style, combining wit, light irony, and social observation. It remains of interest both as an entertaining narrative and as a glimpse into the formative period of one of the most distinctive voices in English humor.
