Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Two brothers thrown into the middle of a conflict based around magic and old grudges
The twins Emil and Brighton live in a world where there are two opposing factions always in conflict. There's the 'Celestials', people who've been blessed with magic since they were born, and then there's the 'Specters', people who steal their magic from mystic beasts. Brighton wants nothing more than to wake up as a celestial himself and join the fight, while Emil just wants all the fighting and cruelty to stop. When the two brothers get roped into a specter attack something impossible happens. Emil awakens powers and manages to fend of the specters, but now he is put in the spotlight as a hero. Both he and Brighton are left to figure out how to continue on with their lives, both being put into roles they didn't want, but having no choice in the matter in the end. Now they get caught up in the middle of the conflict, and soon they have to make a choice.
Well what can I say? Adam Silvera is the one author where I will probably like every book he writes, but don't be fooled, that doesn't mean that this book is good. I personally enjoyed it, but I can definitely see why people don't like this book all that much. All I'm saying is don't go into this book with too many high expectations.
For the good things first, I liked the way magic was handled, with the mix between born magic-users and those who steal their magic from mystic beasts giving some depth to the world. I also liked Emil as a protagonist and his conflict with being the hero people now put in the spotlight, when all he wants is for the fighting to stop. I generally found the history behind the Specters and especially Emil's powers interesting and really hope that this aspect gets fleshed out a little more.
Now to the bad. The worst offender were the pacing issues, most of the time everything moves way too fast and I scratched my head at some of the relationship developments. I kind of hope that this will be solved in the second book. The characters also suffer from sounding very similar to each other. Also, some of the character motivations left me slightly confused, wondering just how exactly they came to that specific conclusion…
All in all I think that 'Infinity Son' could've used a bit more time to get fleshed out a little more. I personally enjoyed the book, but once again I'm pretty biased. It's in all honesty pretty mediocre, but not bad read per se. If you want a quick and easy story, with hints of fantasy I would recommend the book.
