    Wonderful book!

    As someone with Asian roots, lots of self doubt and a queer identity, this book was healing. I definitely recommend it to anyone who questions about their orientation/identity. It was also great for me to see that queer Asian-Americans get more visible!

    In der Geschichte begleiten wir Lily, ein chinesisches Mädchen, dass zusammen mit ihren Eltern und Geschwistern in San Francisco in Chinatown der 50er Jahre lebt. Sie liebt die Raumfahrt und alles was mit Wissenschaft zu tun hat, eher unüblich für Mädchen, grad in der Zeit. Sie stößt auch bei ihrer besten Freundin sehr auf Unverständnis. Doch dann begegnet sie Kat und ihre Welt wird auf den Kopf gestellt. Mir hat die Geschichte sehr gut gefallen. Lily ist ein wundervolles Mädchen. Etwas introvertiert aber sehr liebenswürdig. In dem Buch lernt man viel über die damalige Zeit, grad was die Chinesischen Einwanderer betrifft. Zwischen den Kapiteln, gab es immer wieder eine Auflistung, was so zwischen den einzelnen Jahren/Monaten so alles Geschichtlich passiert ist aber auch welche Stationen die Charaktere aus dem Buch gemacht haben. Da gab es dann auch von Lilys Eltern oder ihrer Tante Rückblicke, ich denke das war nur um aufzuzeigen, dass es für sie in der Zeit nicht ganz so einfach war als Einwanderer. Die Entwicklung zwischen Lily und Kat fand ich sehr gut. Die Gefühle der Beiden wurden wunderbar transportiert, was an dem sehr schönen Schreibstil der Autorin liegt. Mit Kat besucht Lily das erste Mal den "Telegraph Club", ein Ort für homosexuelle Frauen in dem Männerimitatorinnen auftreten. Ich fand es erschreckend, dass es damals sogar ein Versammlungsverbot für homosexuelle gab. Ich hatte mich mit dem Thema nie so tief beschäftigt, daher fand ich die ganzen Informationen dazu sehr interessant. Die Autorin hat sehr gute Recherche Arbeit geleistet, welches am Ende des Buches zu lesen gibt. Besonders hat mir da gefallen, dass die Übersetzerin nochmal zu Wort gekommen ist, um einiges zu erklären. Vor allem was den Sprachgebrauch in der Zeit angeht. Sehr lesenswert. Das Cover des Buches gefällt mir auch sehr gut, sehr passend zur Geschichte. Für mich ist dieses Buch eine klare Leseempfehlung

    Ich liebe historische Romane.…

    Ich liebe historische Romane. Für mich fühlt es sich immer ein bisschen an wie Zeitreisen und besonders, wenn Städte oder Orte besonders detailliert beschrieben werden, entstehen richtige Filme vor meinen Augen. Insgesamt ist mir in den letzten Jahren aber immer wieder aufgefallen, dass teilweise immer noch Repräsentation von verschiedenen Sexualitäten oder Ethnien, gerade in Bücher für Jugendliche oder junge Erwachsene fehlt. Umso mehr habe ich mich also auf "Last Night at the Telegraph Club" gefreut. Lily kommt aus Chinatown, interessiert sich vor allem für Mathematik und Raumfahrt und bemüht sich in der Schule um Bestleistungen, damit sie sich einen Platz am College ermöglichen kann. Mit ihren Hobbys und Träumen fällt sie immer wieder auf und eckt an - bis sie Kath trifft. Von ihr fühlt sie sich verstanden und schon bald entwickelt sich zwischen den Mädchen eine Freundschaft. Oder doch mehr? Denn mit Kath betritt Lily auch zum ersten Mal den "Telegraph Club", einen Ort, wo sich homosexuelle Frauen versammeln. Was, wenn sie sich nun endlich zugehörig fühlt, wo chinesisch und homosexuell zu sein, doch in den 50ern in den USA eine gefährliche Kombination ist? Schon von der ersten Seite an habe ich gemerkt, dass dieses Buch etwas ganz Besonderes ist. Die Autorin hat einen wunderschönen Schreibstil und erzählt lebhaft und mit vielen liebevollen Details von San Francisco, aber vor allem von Lilys Gefühlen, ihre Selbstfindungszeit und den historischen, politischen Konflikten. Dabei malt sie intensive Bilder vor dem inneren Auge und man spürt bei jedem Laden, jedem Ereignis, wie ordentlich und tiefgreifend Malindo Lo für diesen Roman recherchiert hat. So habe ich schon bald bewusst langsam gelesen um wirklich alles mitzubekommen. Im Fokus der Geschichte steht natürlich Lily. In einem authentischen Tempo begleiten wir sie dabei, wie sie anfängt sich zu fragen "Bin ich anders?", "Bin ich so, wie die Frauen im Telegraph Club?" und spüren regelrecht wie immer stärke Gefühle und gleichzeitig auch ein unglaublicher Wille für diese zu kämpfen in ihr wachsen. Die Autorin beschreibt nicht nur das innerliche Gefühlschaos einer 17-Jährigen mit viel Feingefühl, sondern beleuchtet auch die verschiedenen Nebencharaktere, die Beziehungen und die unterschwelligen Konflikte genau. Es war faszinierend zu sehen, wie sich die Geschichte immer weiter entfaltet hat, besonders weil man mit der Zeit auch andere Zeitstränge zu Lilys Mutter und ihrer Tante Judy, sowie generell aktuellen politischen Ereignissen der damaligen Zeit bekommt. So bekommt man als Leser mit der Zeit ein tieferes und sehr ehrliches Verständnis dafür, was es damals hieß zu der Chinesisch-amerikanischen Community zu gehören - zusätzlich natürlich zu dem Aspekt der Queerness. Die Beziehung der beiden Mädchen, war in meinen Augen so sanft, so liebevoll, so berührend dargestellt - ich glaube, ich habe schon lange nicht mehr so sehr für zwei Charaktere die Daumen gedrückt. Für mich war es auch sehr spannend mehr darüber zu erfahren, wie Homosexuelle sich damals gegenseitig getroffen, sich trotz offiziellen Verboten gefunden und Schutz/Schlupfräume entdeckt haben. Auch das Nachwort der Autorin, in welchem sie nochmals genauer auf historische Gegebenheiten und Ereignisse eingeht und diese zu einem großen Gesamtbild verbindet, war in meinen Augen sehr interessant. Fazit: Schon lange hat mich kein Buch mehr so nachträglich gemacht und mich gleichzeitig so schnell in eine ganz andere Welt und Zeit versetzt. Mir sind die Charaktere unglaublich ans Herz gewachsen, ich bin dankbar, dass ich Lily und Kath in einer so intensiven, schwierigen und wunderschönen Zeit ihres Lebens begleiten durfte. Eine ganz große Leseempfehlung! 5 von 5 Sternen

    A speakeasy to fall in love with

    From the first chapter on I knew this was going to be a five star review for me. The writing style was so intriguing and you couldn't help but feel with the characters. A great look into queer, Asian-American history with a feminist message and hopeful ending. Loved it!

    The hype is real!

    This book is about a young Asian-American woman, growing up in the 1950s, while coming to terms with her sexuality. The whole historical part is just so well done, Malinda Lo definitely did her research. Normally, I don't go for books based on a hype, but it was so worth it. This story transports you to a whole different place and time, I absolutely loved it. I admit, I'm a bit lost for words, because it was just so beautiful. Lily's love for science and outer space blew me away. Not literally, but I do like all things sciency. If you haven't read it yet, DO IT!

    Eine Liebesgeschichte in San Francisco in den 50er Jahren, deren Umstände einem das Herz brechen. Lily hat es als junges Mädchen aus einer chinesisch-amerikanischen Familie nicht leicht und als sie Kath trifft wird es nur noch komplizierter. Berührend!
