Gunfire, palisades and anxious petitions: the struggle for colonial Pennsylvania comes into sharp focus through its chain of frontier forts. The stakes were brutally real. In Volume I of Report of the Commission to Locate the Site of the Frontier Forts of Pennsylvania, Thomas Lynch Montgomery assembles an authoritative colonial Pennsylvania history book that traces the outposts guarding the 18th century Pennsylvania frontier, from the Alleghenies to the Susquehanna. Based on original state investigations into Pennsylvania frontier forts locations, this official military forts historical report and frontier history reference book explores the creation, purpose and fate of key strongholds in the colonial era middle colonies, including French and Indian War forts and posts born of Native American frontier conflicts. Blending American frontier military history with glimpses of early Pennsylvania settlers life, it offers a dense factual narrative for the general reader and a rigorous research book for historians. Rich local detail makes it an invaluable resource for genealogists and collectors of regional history seeking to understand the landscapes in which their families lived and served. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
