A Brilliant Blend of History, Humanity, and Courage

Alison Goodman combines historical precision with narrative power and social relevance. The Lady’s Road Guide to Utter Ruin is far more than historical entertainment – it is thoughtful, modern Enlightenment literature disguised as a gripping Regency adventure. The author masterfully blends meticulous research with poetic license. Real historical figures such as Beau Brummell and the Ladies of Llangollen appear alongside fictional characters, making history feel immediate and human. Goodman explores themes that remain strikingly contemporary: female self-determination, abuse of power, class divisions, medical misconceptions, and moral hypocrisy. Particularly compelling is her sensitive treatment of physical and emotional health – from the dangers of Blue Mass pills to the realities of strangulation – as well as her empathetic portrayal of LGBTQ themes through Lady Hester and Miss Grant. Goodman writes with courage, and conviction in a world determined to silence women and outsiders. A literarily refined, atmospheric novel that unites suspense, insight, and integrity – and leaves me eager for the third installment.
