Goodwin says he was born with horse manure in his blood and that he wanted to be a rancher and cowboy for as long as he could remember. He spent much of his young life on farms and wanting to spend the rest of his life in the in the saddle. Goodwin says that when he was a kid in high school he was privileged to spend several years working nights as a houseparent at a school for the deaf and blind. He writes about that experience and says it taught him to be responsible and to have empathy for others.
