We Could Be So Good A Novel

“We could be so good” takes place during a time when homosexuality was very much in the public eye but still forbidden and heavily persecuted. It follows two young queer men, one coming to terms with his sexuality while the other has been living as a gay man for years. But Nick is scared. Scared of being found to an extent where he isn’t allowing himself to truly live, all while carrying the kind of shame that comes with existing in a world that hates you openly. But despite the time period and the heavy topics, the book has so much heart. It’s sweet and romantic and full of queer joy. It gives the characters the kind of happy life that Nick is so sure he will never have. Nick and Andy are so good together, their relationship is believable and well written. But what works so well in this book are the characters standing on their own. Their fears and hopes and relationships with other people. The journalism aspect of the story was also very interesting, and the police story Nick kept pursuing gave the book a certain kind of danger that wasn't simply about their relationship and/or sexuality. Overall, “We could be so good” is an amazing historical romance that still holds up to a second reread.
