Truly a masterpiece
Lisa See transports her readers to the 15th century China and tells the life story of Tan Yunxian, an extraordinary woman who despite the strict rules and expectations of her time, seeks to forge her own path. What impressed me most was the calm and richly detailed storytelling. Through Lady Tan's eyes we gain a deep insight into the lives of Chinese women of that era, their hopes, their duties, their friendships and the few opportunities that were available to them. The meticulous research brings the historical world to life without ever losing sight of the story's emotional core. The novel is not only about the art of healing and traditions, but above all about courage, friendship and the desire to find one's own voice. A beautiful and deeply moving novel and definitely not the last work by Lisa See that I'll be reading! Lisa See could publish her grocery list at this point and I'd read it and be thankful for it.
