Blumwald is a town overshadowed by an ancient curse: in a sinister castle in the depths of the wild wood lives a monstrous Witch. Once a generation, she comes to claim a companion to return with her - never to be seen again. Now that time is drawing near once more...
Mina, daughter of the duke, is grieving and lonely. She has lost all hope of any future for herself in Blumwald. So when the Witch demands her next companion, Mina offers herself up - though she has no idea what fate awaits her. Stranded with her darkly alluring captor, the mystery of what happened to the previous companions draws Mina into the heart of a terrifying secret that could save her life, or end it.

Buch (Taschenbuch)
Sapphic gothic fantasy with a touch of fairy tale
In a faraway castle on a mountain lives a powerful witch. Once every generation, the witch takes a person from the neighboring towns as a companion, who is never seen again. Mina, the daughter of a duke and unwanted in the family after her father remarried, volunteers to accompany the witch when she reappears. The witch turns out to be a bitter person who doesn't want to have contact with anyone. But why is Nina there if not to keep her company? What does the witch hide in her tower? And what happened to all the companions before her? Slowly the protagonist gets to know the witch and even more slowly she discovers the secret of her former companions. ‘Bitterthorn’ is a sapphic gothic fantasy novel. It shows strong influences from fairy tales such as ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Although the mystery was very well constructed, I was frustrated that 2/3 of the book could have been skipped if the witch had just talked to the protagonist. The potential for a perfect experience was there, but neither the horror elements nor the coziness hit the mark for me.
