L.A. seems like a fake, capitalist hellhole to me. Primarily because it IS. There’s no justice, no humanity, an utter lack of empathy wherever money is concerned.This was honestly such a cathartic read - showcasing how easily we get trapped in the illusion that we could make it big... if we just sold our conscience. I'd recommend this to anyone who’s disillusioned enough to care about the dire effects of a society that values profit more than peoples lives.

Weird in the best way

"Ripe" is about Cassie who struggles to maintain the balance between the corporate nightmare that is her dream job and the miniature black hole that has always been her constant companion. This hole feeds on her depression and anxiety, its size changing in relation to her distress. The book is very weird and I really enjoyed those aspects, but it was a bit too on the nose with its criticism of capitalism and fascism.
