A cool romantasy with Korean mythology

Katsbookshelf am 15.05.2024

Bewertungsnummer: 2201667

Bewertet: eBook (ePUB)

The God and The Gumiho by Sophie Kim is the first book in the Fate‘s Threads Series.   This story is set in South Korea and also inspired by Korean myths and folklore, and I really enjoyed that. In this book an unlikely pair must work together to track down a demon that threatens the mortal world and this concept was great. Seokga is a fallen trickster god and Kim Hani is a gumiho known as the Scarlet Fox. I absolutely love stories with a nine-tailed fox, and it was done great in this one as well.   Seokga and Kim don’t like each other in the beginning and the hate to love vibes were strong in this story. Next to the sprinkles of romance the story also included a great mystery plot and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and I was glued to the pages and couldn’t stop reading. In addition, the writing style is very flowery and poetic and that is something I really liked, and it made me appreciate the storytelling more.   Overall, I really enjoyed The God and The Gumiho and if you like an action packed romantasy with mythology, definitely check this one out. 4 stars.   (ARC kindly provided in exchange for a review.)

Magic, Mystery, and a Touch of Mischief

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

"The God and the Gumiho" is a captivating blend of fantasy and Korean mythology. The story follows Hani and Seokga, whose grumpy x sunshine dynamic truly wins you over—while I initially chose the book for Seokga's intriguing nature, Hani's vibrant character quickly stole my heart. The novel effortlessly combines modern settings with ancient lore. Even though I had to look up a few mythical Korean creatures, it never broke the smooth, engaging flow of the narrative. With balanced pacing and immersive world-building, this book is a must-read for fans of fantasy and mythology.

She threw coffee at him and I love her for that

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

After reading the first few pages, I knew that I would love it. Hani is a hilarious Female Lead. She's the "Scarlet Fox", a Gumiho so evil that she became legendary - and she ate too many human souls and livers, so now she can't eat any more. Girl is stuffed. And so very fed up with the Male Lead, Seokga, whom she has to serve coffee because yeah, she's an evil mystical creature, but she does need the money! Rent is due! Seokga is also hilarious, but in the opposite way of Hani. After not quiet managing to overthrow his brothers celestial kingdom, he is forced to kill all the demons (20.000) that he brought for his little coup d'etat. They fled to the human realm though, so that's where he's been for the past few centuries. The book is written in both of the lead's POV's, which I am usually not a fan of, but liked in this case. Both Leads are very enjoyable and there hatred foreach other was perfect! What I didn't like is that there was no glossary. This book would really have been better with one. I knew what a Gumiho was, but other creatures from korean legends or religion I had no clue of. Not even how to pronounce them, which really put a bit of a bummer in my joy of reading. I do like to know how to pronounce things, but google really wasn't much of a help here.

Fancy magic, grumpy gods and a sassy fox

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

If you like fantasy kdrama this is the perfect book for your collection. The story follows a fallen trickster god trying to solve a murder series and a cunning gumiho making his life a living hell. The story was captivating and fun with just the right amount of thriling suspense. All in all this book was a really good read with actual enemies to lovers action!
