The Lies of Locke Lamora

Scott Lynch’s writing Style is fun and deeply authentic, overflowing with rogueish charme. I’ve enjoyed this much more than I initially thought I would. So many fantasy authors try to capture what Lynch so effortlessly does within ‘The Lies of Locke Lamora’ - brilliant and morally grey characters, a ton of very amusing and clever banter, fantastic worldbuilding... you really can’t go wrong by giving this a try.

Uff! I think I’ve found my first insta-buy-author! Scott Lynch created something truly amazing with the world and story surrounding Locke Lamora and the rest of the Gentleman Bastards. The worldbuilding was so good! The little flashbacks were superbly placed and gave so much information at a good interval, so that I as a reader wasn’t swamped with all the facts & figures at the beginning. There was still a lot but I think The author knows exactly when’s too much. It was a slow start too, and for the first 100 pages that bothered me but I soon got over it, as the pacing quickened and we also got some scenes depicting friendship and 'brotherhood'. That’s another thing the author writes exceptionally well: the relationships and dynamics between the Bastards (but also with the people they meet). There’s so many funny interactons which you’ll just have to read yourself, because this caption section doesn’t allow for too many words. The plot didn’t disappoint either. It took a while for it to kick off but when it did … my, oh my! I wish I could say something but I’m too affraid to give anything away. You’ll just have to take my word for it and go buy that book! The intrigues, the schemes, the lies, the stealing, the plotting: And all of this is encased and brought together by the author’s *marvellous* writing style. I’m in awe and I’m sure I caught a few tiny flies with my jaw hanging to the floor … yes, it’s that good! It’s his way of describing places, scenarios and conversations that put him on 4 stars already. All the things I explained before lifted it to a smashing 5-star-book. CAN’T WAIT TO READ BOOK No. 2!!! One of my fave quotes: "And then you may dress your own wounds, sir, and apply your own poultices, though I dare say it would be quicker and easier for the pair of you to simply dig your own graves and take your ease in them until your inevitable transition to a more quiet state of affairs!"

Bestes Buch, das ich je gelesen habe. 10/10 would read again. Anfangs ist es schwer in den Schreibstil hinein zu kommen, vor allem durch die vielen Zeit-Sprünge, die die Action an einigen stellen stoppen, jedoch ist das nichts im Gegensatz zu der genialen Story und den ausgezeichneten Charakteren, welche Scott Lynch hier an den Tag bringt.

"The Lies of Locke Lamora" beschreibt die Geschichte eines Jungen, der in einer harten Fantasy-Welt zum Dieb erzogen wird. Allerdings nicht zu irgendeinem Dieb. Locke hat die orginellsten Einfälle und plant später das perfekte Verbrechen. Doch leider kommt ihm der Rachefeldzug eines Kollegen immer wieder in die Quere. Unglaublich, was Autor Scott Lynch hier abliefert. Der Plot windet sich wie eine Wendeltreppe zum Höhepunkt hinauf und überrascht den Leser an jeder neuen Biegung aufs Neue. Grossartige, dunkle Fantasy.

Hauptpersonen der Geschichte sind eine Gruppe Diebe - nein, keine einfachen Diebe, sondern regelrechte Trickbetrüger, die mit Mühe und Einfallsreichtum ihre Coups durchziehen. Aber es wäre ja zu einfach, wenn es immer glatt läuft... Die Geschichte wird in zwei Handlungssträngen erzählt - der eine beschreibt den aktuellen Geniestreich der Gentleman Bastards um ihren Anführer Locke Lamora, der andere erzählt in kurzen Rückblenden, wie Locke als Kind zur Gruppe kam. "The Lies of Locke Lamora" ist eine Fundgrube voller Tricks, cleveren Ideen und Spannung, flüssig zu lesen und flott erzählt. Den Leser erwarten sympathische Charaktere, eine geheimnisvolle, nicht von Menschen erbaute Stadt, viel Witz und auch eine Spur Tragik. Wer dieses Buch mag, dem wird sicher auch die Fortsetzung "Red Seas under Red Skies" gefallen.
