    I'm in love

My partner recommended this book to me as the main character is ace and it became my new obsession The writing is perfect and with every page it becomes more twisted and dark and in the end you are lost with the characters not knowing what is true and what not I rarely read books a second time and this one I read three times by now and I have it just 2 months

    When stories bleed into reality

Andrew and Thomas, both students at Wickwood Academy, are best friends and artists. Andrew writes dark, haunting fairy tales, and Thomas brings them to life through his drawings. But soon, what they’ve created on paper seems to bleed into reality - and night after night, the two must face the monsters emerging from the forest. The story is definitely intriguing, but there was something I couldn’t quite connect with. This was my second book by C. G. Drews, and while I admire the author’s storytelling, this one didn’t reach me as deeply as I’d hoped. Andrew and Thomas are characters you want to care about, and I expected to feel their emotions and trauma more strongly. Unfortunately, that emotional depth didn’t fully land for me. Maybe it’s because, from the very beginning, the story reminded me of A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness - and since I had a sense of where the book was heading, it couldn’t quite surprise me. Some parts of the story also felt a bit repetitive and predictable to me. I can’t fully put my finger on it, but something kept me from connecting with the story the way I wanted to. What I really appreciated, though, were the themes the book explores - especially the representation of different sexualities and the portrayal of anxiety. Those elements were handled thoughtfully and added real depth to the story. Still, the book as a whole didn’t completely win me over. That said, I read it quite quickly because it is engaging and has a strong sense of atmosphere and tension. It’s a story with both heart and darkness, even if it stumbled a little for me personally.

a dark fairytale at its finest

first and foremost: thank you so much to the employee that recommended this to me. you have amazing taste :) i devoured this book the same day i bought it. unironically. the entire idea of the forest being a living thing, and a dangerous one at that, intrigued me. the characters are constantly caught in a battle between their juvenile silliness and the terrifying situation. the gloomy, suspenseful mood of the setting is impeccable. i could picture every horrific detail very clearly (perhaps too clearly). this book had me at the verge of insanity and i love it. also, the drawings. absolutely gorgeous. if you, like me, are drawn to strange, grotesque, but heartbreakingly poetic things, i promise you won't be disappointed.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Beautifully written and impossible to forget

Even though “Don’t Let The Forest In” is their debut novel, CG Drews already shows such talent within their writing style. It’s lyrical and intricate while still maintaining its easy understanding of the plot. It’s impressive how delicately they can elaborate the relationship between Andrew and Thomas to its very core. The obsession and deep dependence of each other is so noticeable it’s almost hard to read about. “Don’t Let The Forest In” is dark, it’s intense, it’s horrific and most definitely one of the best books I’ve ever read!

“He had a beast caged behind his ribs and it took all his energy to keep it there.”

    Finally more YA horror!

A truly wonderful YA horror story. CG Drews is now definitely on my list of favorite authors! The combination of body horror, unreliable narrator, mental health issues and queer love story is truly one of a kind. The monsters are described in detail and the drawings are simply terrific. The plottwist at the end is foreshadowed but it still caught me by surprise.  I really loved the book and recommend it to everyone interested in horror!

When your own creations are out for blood

"Don't Let the Forest In" is a story about two boys—one who shapes a completely unknown and dark world through his writing, and another who brings these stories to life through his paintings. Together, they create a living forest whose monsters haunt them so dreadfully that the book is filled with intense emotions and tender moments that neither the boys nor the readers can fully comprehend. With its added illustrations of magical creatures, metaphorical descriptions of the haunting forest, and the angst steeped in dark emotions, this book fully captures my inner nature aesthete, as everything aligns to portray a dark fairytale cast into reality.
