"Pan Tadeusz", or in full - "Pan Tadeusz, or the last raid in Lithuania. A noble story of 1811-1812 in twelve books, written in verse" is the most significant work of Adam Mickiewicz, an epic poem written in 1832-1834 in Paris, where the poet lived in exile, and published there in 1834.
The main characters of the poem, Tadeusz and Zosya, are representatives of two competing aristocratic families - Soplitsi and Goreshki. The poem from a romantic idyll (the model for which was Goethe's idyll "Herman and Dorothea") grows into a broad epic picture that combines household, military, love and patriotic lines.
The poem depicts the life, lifestyle and customs of the Polish and Lithuanian nobility so faithfully and in detail (a description of hunting, feasts, holidays, customs) that during the author's lifetime it was described as "Encyclopedia of Polish Life".
