To Ride a Rising Storm The Second Book of Nampeshiweisit

I had just as much of a great time reading this one as I did with the first. A heads-up right at the start: this book is not faster than book one (as some might expect), and it only picks up tension at the very end, leaving us on the brink of war for book three. For some, this book might be too slow-paced, and I would understand that sentiment if one struggles with slower books. I personally really enjoyed it as a break between all the high-action, high-speed stories that often fill this genre. This book focuses on Anequs' second term at school and how her rising "fame" influences her experience, but still doesn't solve the micro-aggressions and racism she, Theod, and other indigenous characters face. I also really enjoyed the introduction of Sadsong, and I can already tell she will have a big influence on the story in the next book. Anequs is beginning to be even more outspoken about the unbalanced treatment of different cultures and peoples, and I am interested to see when she reaches the point where she just throws all caution to the wind. I think that might be entertaining (although potentially quite dangerous). Anequs, Theod, and Liberty's relationship made quiet and slow progress in this instalment, which I thought was a great reflection of reality. Insta-love isn't always what happens, and not all involved parties might be comfortable at the same speed, especially if society's expectations are stacked against you. My hopes and dreams for the third book, without too many spoilers, include: Anequs, Theod, and Liberty finding a relationship dynamic that works for them, Niquiat surviving and hopefully establishing a workshop on Masquapaug, some sort of showdown where Anequs tells them all to f*** off with their old-school views, and, of course, Kasaqua becoming a powerful (and flying) companion to Anequs. While the first book ended with a closure, this stops with a steep cliff hanger. Otherwise, I like the story setting with alternative history, dragons, native Americans and colonizers relationship as well as the young adult perspective a lot. For people without any background in (school) chemistry, "skiltacraft" with its alternative names for the elements can be a bit challenging (or educational).
