Discover the Hidden Mystical Roots of Psychoanalysis In Sigmund Freud and the Jewish Mystical Tradition, eminent psychologist David Bakan presents a provocative and deeply researched hypothesis: that the supposedly secular, purely scientific foundations of Freudian psychoanalysis were profoundly shaped by ancient Jewish mysticism. While Freud publicly positioned psychoanalysis as a strict biological and medical science, Bakan traces the undeniable parallels between Freud's core concepts and the traditions of the Kabbalah, the Zohar, and Hasidism. He argues that Freud's techniques-such as free association, the interpretation of dreams, and the unearthing of hidden meanings in the unconscious-draw heavily from centuries of Jewish mystical practices and esoteric hermeneutics. Inside this classic interdisciplinary text, readers will explore:The Kabbalistic Connection: The striking similarities between psychoanalytic methods and ancient Jewish mystical texts. Freud's Hidden Heritage: How Freud's cultural background secretly informed his revolutionary theories of the human mind. The History of Psychology: A brilliant re-examination of the origins of modern therapeutic practice. A masterpiece of historical and psychological detective work, Sigmund Freud and the Jewish Mystical Tradition is essential reading for students of psychoanalysis, scholars of religion, and anyone fascinated by the true origins of modern psychological thought.
