When Among Crows

Eine kurze Fantasy-Novelle basierend auf polnischer Folkloremärchen inmitten von Chicago??? Da bin ich definitiv dabei! Nicht nur, weil ich vor vielen Jahren einen der fabelhaftesten Urlaube in Chicago hatte, sondern auch, weil ich auch polnische Wurzeln habe. Für alle, die also einen entfernten/ nahen Bezug zu polnischen Dingen haben (oder ein wenig darüber erfahren möchten), ist diese kleine Geschichte besonders perfekt. Die Geschichte hat ein flottes Tempo, eine tolle Gruppe von Protagonist*innen und unterhält auch mit einer spannenden Storyline. Wer gerne auf Flüche, Bestimmungen, uralte Legenden und Monster trifft, die sich von menschlichen Emotionen ernähren, wird hier nur so durch die Seiten fliegen. Ich freu mich jetzt jedenfalls schon auf den zweiten Band!

This little, short book is so good I don't exactly know what to say. To wrap so much content in so few pages without confusing or leaving lose ends isn't easilly done. But here it is. I really loved the mix between Polish folklore with urban fantasy. I just wish know that I would know a little bit Polish to know how certain words are pronounced. I think fans of the Witcher saga would love this.

Short, thrilling, absolutely phenomenal story about polish folklore, curses, vengeance and sacrifices. I recommend going in blind - don't even read the blurb. Trust me.

A short urban fantasy that will leave you wanting more! This book weaves slavic folklore, fantasy, drama and action into barely 200 pages. In spite of its short length the world building is well fleshed out and the character-dynamics establish themselves quickly while keeping you hooked on its charming characters.

Now let me start by saying, that I did enjoy parts of the story... The worldbuilding and lore surrounding this book were great and the storytelling does pull the reader into the story not just enough to stick.. The characters were not fleshed out in the slightest and the chemestry between our three protagonists basically not existent. The romance between Dymitr and Nico felt extremely out of place and wrongfully timed. I would've probably ate this up, had it been longer and more fleshed out characters but alas there is only so much an author can cram into 150 pages...
