The GDR Exposed: Power, Surveillance, Betrayal - and the People Behind East Germany's Socialist Dictatorship
Erich Honecker was the public face of "actually existing socialism" - and the man who ultimately betrayed an entire nation. But he was never alone.
Behind him stood figures like Erich Mielke, the all-seeing architect of the Stasi surveillance state. Margot Honecker, who ruled over education with ideological iron discipline. And Günter Mittag, who turned economic shortage into state doctrine.
This book looks back - at East Germany as it truly was.
A country that many called home, yet one permeated by surveillance, censorship, and rigid class privilege. It shows how politicians, teachers, officers, and artists became part of the system - some out of conviction, others out of fear, many through quiet adaptation.
And it follows the story beyond 1989:
Those who dared the transition and shaped a reunited Germany. Gregor Gysi, who negotiated the politically impossible. Angela Merkel, who rose from FDJ secretary to Chancellor. Joachim Gauck, who went from civil rights activist to Federal President.
Readers will remember - or discover for the first time - life in the so-called "first workers' and peasants' state on German soil."
They will hear the echoes of Walter Ulbricht's speeches and read between the lines of the communist lies printed in Neues Deutschland. They will recognize the glow of West German television flickering through darkened living rooms - and confront the unanswered questions that still linger today.
A book for those who lived through the GDR - and for anyone who wants to understand what really happened behind the Iron Curtain.
