George Harrison might have been known as "the quiet Beatle," but his influence on music and culture was profound. Born in Liverpool in 1943, Harrison developed a strong love of rock 'n' roll and joined the band aged only 15. As The Beatles rose to global fame, George became recognised not only as a skilled guitarist but also as an increasingly important songwriter.
Although often overshadowed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Harrison was responsible for some of The Beatles' most memorable later songs, including "Something", "Here Comes the Sun" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". His songwriting combined strong melodies with emotional depth and thoughtful lyrics.
Harrison became deeply interested in Indian music and spirituality. His friendship with Ravi Shankar introduced him to the sitar, meditation and Eastern philosophy: influences that shaped both his music and his personal outlook. He played a major role in bringing these ideas and sounds to Western audiences.
After The Beatles split in 1970, Harrison launched a successful solo career with All Things Must Pass and organised The Concert for Bangladesh. Featuring Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and former bandmate Ring Starr among many others, the shows were some of the first major charity concerts in rock history.
George Harrison remains remembered as a gifted musician, spiritual seeker and quietly influential cultural figure, whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
SAMPLE QUOTE
"We gained strength from each other. John was always the noisy one; he'd be more outspoken than the others. I think that was important: John being upmarket with the intellectuals, Paul being cute, and Ringo being cuddly. I was the quiet one, so it all kind of worked out." - George, on the essential individuality of the Beatles, interview with David Hartman, Good Morning America, 10 October 1981
SAMPLE FACT
Many of the songs on Harrison's debut solo album All Things Must Pass were songs that he had written during The Beatles years that never made it onto record. Harrison himself said, "It was like unburdening myself with all these songs that were basically from the past. I wanted to get back into the present."
