He also preserves the darker transformation of the conqueror: the killing of Cleitus, the execution of Philotas, the murder of Parmenion, the adoption of Persian court customs, the demand for prostration, and the growing distance between the king and the Macedonians who had followed him across the world.
Arrian admires Alexander without surrendering judgment. His history asks whether conquest can ever satisfy the appetite that drives it-and whether a man capable of mastering nations can master himself.
