How can private desire be reconciled with duty, class, and expectation? First published in 1919, Woolf's second novel stands between nineteenth-century comedy of manners and her later modernism. Its detailed social world and intricate courtships make it one of her most approachable novels, while its treatment of women's ambition, emotional honesty, and self-determination remains strikingly current. Night and Day is a thoughtful, often comic story of four people discovering that choosing whom to love cannot be separated from choosing how to live.
