In Carson’s view, Simonides and Celan share a similar attitude toward the world, language, and the role of the poet. Economy of the Unlost presents both writers as figures caught between two worlds: Simonides lived during the transition from a gift-based economy to one shaped by money and commodities, while Celan’s life was marked by the rupture between the pre- and post-Holocaust worlds. Celan also became estranged from German, the language in which he wrote.
Carson then examines how both poets try to approach the invisible through the visible. Her discussion of epitaphs reveals how each poet imagines an exchange between the living and the dead. She also argues that the physical act of inscribing words on stone may have shaped Simonides’ brief, exact, and clear style. This is compared to Celan’s interest in a kind of “negative design,” similar to printmaking, where everything unnecessary is cut away. Although the two poets differ in important ways. Simonides maintains a belief in the power of language, while Celan moves toward despair. Carson’s comparison highlights both their contrasts and their shared poetic concerns
