He asked the question nobody thinks to ask.
Not when God came, or how, but whether it made any sense for him to come at all. Thomas Aquinas opens his treatment of the Incarnation by stating every argument against it first, more strongly than his opponents had managed, and only then replying.
That habit is why he is worth twenty-five days. He is not trying to win. He is trying to see clearly, and he assumes you can too.
What you get each day- A short reflection in plain modern prose, written for someone with about fifteen minutes.
- A passage from Aquinas himself, drawn from Part III of the Summa Theologiae in clear modern English and cited to its exact question and article, so you can look it up and check it.
- A closing thought and a one-line prayer.
The twenty-five readings run from the first of December to Christmas morning as a single line of thought, not a set of unrelated meditations:
- The Waiting (days 1 to 6): whether it made sense for God to come at all, and why he took so long.
- The Fittingness (days 7 to 12): the body he took, and from whom.
- The Yes (days 13 to 18): the woman who was asked, and what her answer meant.
- The Child (days 19 to 24): who the child is, and who was told first.
- Christmas Morning (day 25).
Four short interludes, after days 6, 12, 18 and 24, let you catch your breath between movements.
By the twenty-fifth you will not only have kept Advent. You will have read one of the most careful minds in Christian history working through what Christmas actually claims.
Also inside- The seven O Antiphons in plain modern English.
- Three hymns attributed to Aquinas. He is remembered as a philosopher, which has hidden the fact that he was also a poet.
- A companion reading plan for the Twelve Days and Epiphany, carrying you from Christmas into the Summa itself.
- A guide to reading an article of the Summa, a glossary, and an outline of Part III, so you can go on without help.
- A list of every passage quoted and of every Scripture named in the readings.
Set in 16-point large print. Scripture is quoted from the World English Bible. The Summa passages are selected portions, sometimes condensed, in the Clear Text Editions modern English rendering of the public-domain Dominican Province translation. The reflections are original.
No prior reading of Aquinas is needed. Nothing is assumed except an interest in taking the season seriously.
Companion to Lent with Aquinas. Together the two volumes cover the Church's two seasons of preparation.
Clear Text Editions. Classic Works. Clear Words.
