Shakespeare and Company

We all know the Tote Bags, but did you know the Shakespeare and Company we love today was not the original store but rather named in her honor? After having read 'The Paris Bookseller' by Kerri Maher, I was fascinated with Sylvia Beach and the life she led so obviously I had to read her memoir. In 'Shakespeare and Company' the author recounts the memories of her friends and connections to the bookstore. The book is sorted by characters rather than written in a chronological timeline which does make it a bit confusing at times but not less interesting. I think her friendship with James Joyce is super fascinating and the entire ordeal of publishing 'Ulysses' was super interesting to me. I too want to have a little bookstore now, enjoy the country side on the weekend with my girlfriend and befriend all the important literary figures of my time. I'd highly recommend this book to everyone who loves to see the stories of characters that are always in someone elses shadow or are interested in book publishing and the literary art scene of the 1920s.
