Oryx and Crake

While Margaret Atwood is best known and loved for 'The Handmaid's Tale' the Maddaddam trilogy is something more people should have on their radar. The first novel starts some time after the 'waterless flood' killed most human life on earth. The main character Snowman seems to have played a pretty big role in this apocalypse. What that role might have been or what the waterless flood even was, are questions that apparently not even Snowman himself can really answer. Struggling to survive he sets out to find the roots of this strange new world. On his journey he is haunted by memories of his best friends Oryx and Crake and relives the moments before the disaster started.  The world after the flood and its inhabitants are as mysterious as the question of how it came to be. This and especially the second book of the trilogy "The Year of the Flood" are must reads for anyone who is interested in dystopian novels and great storytelling.
