Sea of Rust

I saw someone describing this book as anticlimactic and I have to agree. It took me a long time to get into it, because it never really picked up pace. The initial throwbacks explaining how the world came to be were interesting, the middle part intriguing, but it fell flat again towards the end - despite all the shooting and exploding. There were two plottwist I did not see coming, one at the beginning, one at the end. I liked those. Nevertheless I've got to admit I had kind of a hard time reading the rest. It was also a lot darker than I expected. Almost depressing at times, but not quite because it did not make me emotional at all? It's got AIs struggling in a human-like way: failing drives creating some sort of dementia, damaged cores and RAM and wiring leading to PTBS like flashbacks, hallucinations etc. And it's got philosophical questions about what a God is and what makes us unique, some ethical and moral disputes... Usually that's a perfect mix for me. But somehow the book failed to deliver in all of these aspects. It was very much a thinking book and barely an emotion book at all while trying to be the opposite. Combine that with the dystopian-approach to everything and it just didn't do it for me. Sadly, Brittle wasn't someone I cared about.
