At first, Neil Gaiman drops us in ordinary London but then manages within a few pages to transform it into a magical world full of bizarre people. Reading 'Neverwhere' feels peculiar, everything and everyone is odd yet, at the same time, it feels strangely familiar. Like coming home to a weird family. Urban Fantasy at its best!

Diese illustrierte Ausgabe ist ein absoluter Augenschmaus. Viele der beschriebene Charaktere werden in den Illustrationen zum Leben erweckt und auch die kleineren Bilder auf den Seiten, die den Text begleiten machen dieses Buch besonders.
Aber auch die Geschichte von Richard und Door steckt voller Überraschungen, unerwarteter Wendungen, mit Charakteren die Ecken und Kanten haben und nicht immer das sind was sie zu sein scheinen.
Der Schreibstil ist flüssig und die Geschichte mit ungemein viel Charme, Sarkasmus und Witz erzählt, so dass es schwer viel das Buch zur Seite zu legen. Dies habe ich aber in Abständen getan um die ganzen Eindrücke, die man in London Below bekommt verarbeiten zu können. Auf die Gefühle von Richard und seine, besonders am Anfang, Verwirtheit über das was ihm geschieht muss man sich einlassen. Diese Geschichte kann brutal und blutig sein und ist definitiv nichts für Schwache nerven. Trotzdem ist die Idee eines Alternativen Londons und eines jungen Mannes der dort hinein gerät ohne zu wissen worauf er sich einlässt sehr spannend. Besonders am Ende stellt sich die Frage ob er in sein altes Leben zurück will oder bei Door und seinen neu gewonnenen Freunden bleibt? Wie er sich entscheidet müsst ihr schon selbst herausfinden.
des Weiteren hat die illustrierte Ausgabe noch eine Kurzgeschichte dabei, wie der Marquis des Carabas seinen Mantel zurück bekommt, welche weitere Einblicke in diese spannende Welt gibt. Ich hoffe sehr, dass es noch mehr Geschichten aus London Below geben wird.
