Arden does an incredible job of drawing the reader in, making them feel the cold of the Russian winter, and endearing them to the cast of characters she presents in her story. There is a lot of tension between religious influences overtaking the community and the enduring wisdom of old folklore, which paints the backdrop for Vasilisa trying to break out of social and cultural norms. This is a lovely, deep-woven tale whose folkloric beginnings, recounted to Vasilisa as a child, bear fruit in the end when she must defend her people. -
