Bringing down the Patriarchy

Bewertung am 30.04.2022

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

This book surprised me in how much I enjoyed it. In recent times, my reading taste has become increasingly critical of prose and I've showed less and less interest in plot-driven books. This book is quite fast-paced and plot-driven, and the writing is honestly not that great. But this book was so much FUN. It was just such a unique book, even more so for YA. It's historically asian inspired Sci-Fi with an anti-hero protagonist, that's quite dark in a very graphic way (I kinda want to call it grim dark YA haha) . The authorial voice was also very loud, in a sarcastic-critical way. All of that simply felt very fresh and new (though, I have to say that I haven't read much YA in a while). Another, less surprising aspect of this book that I loved was the poly-amory. With patriarchy being the main antagonistic force, I was curious of how the author would execute the MC having romantic feelings for not one, but two cis-male characters. But both dudes were just so great and very wholesome... yeah, the romance was definitely believeable (including the achillean side of the relationship). I also really liked the themes. Yeah, they were a bit on the nose, but I didn't mind because the themes were different from your typical tropes (both in Ya and adult SFF) and I loved the execution. let's just say, it wasn't just "bring down the patriachy", but "burn down the patriarchy and dance in its ashes" and I loved the author's commitment to it. The missing star does come from the past pace and me wanting a bit more time with the characters, as well as the blunt, at times clunky prose (and for that YA is not an excuse). But when viewed as a chinese historical AU fanfic (as Tammie did from the YT channel Tammie tries to Read), it's easy to ignore. I really loved reading it and I'm excited for book two - especially after the reveal at the end.

This book was brilliant. I loved every second of it. It was dark and brutal and the main character is not there to be liked but it is oh so fun to read about a woman bringing down the patriarchal society. This kept me on my toes. There were no breaks and it is a wild ride. Would recommend a lot, but make sure to check the trigger warnings, as the book may not be for everyone. It has some actually very very dark parts and is only just classifiable as YA

Empowering women, but literally.

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

This is exactly what I want to read when the tropes "Strong female character" and "Love triangle" are involved. We're following Wu Zetian, the reimagined only female emperor of China through giant mecha battles and political schemes while crushing the patriarchy. Together with her suprisingly nice co pilot and rich childhood friend, Zetian is more than ready to spill some blood to get what she wants: both information and power. Xiran Jay Zhao knew exactly what they were doing and I can't wait for the sequel.
