Horseman A Tale of Sleepy Hollow

Until now I only knew the series and film about Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman. The book is a perfect addition. Bente lives with her grandparents. Her grandmother would prefer her to grow up as a noble lady, but that’s surely not what Bente has in mind. She is completely fascinated by her grandfather. Furthermore, she much prefers playing in the woods and having adventures rather than learning how to sew or sing. After discovering the headless boy Cristofel, Bente must learn what really lies behind the scary stories of Sleepy Hollow. The book is truly fantastically written. It’s easy to immerse oneself in the characters and the story. It’s consistently exciting and comes highly recommended!

A wonderful retelling from the original story. It is dark, twisted and thrilling til the end. Everybody who liks classic and dark storys will be a big fan. Fans from Christina Henry will like it.

I haven’t heard anything about Christina Henry’s books before. I came upon her novels by chance, looking for fantasy and horror. The title Horseman caught my eye because of the story playing in Sleepy Hollow, a town known from the same film starring Johnny Depp. Christina Henry masterfully reinvented a new interpretation I was positively surprised about. When a headless body is found, everyone in the village believes there’s more to those stories than just legends. Is there a Horseman riding around to kill innocent people? Or is it entirely something else, something that is lingering around town? Never believe what you hear or see until you have the truth. That’s exactly what fourteen-year-old Ben is trying to unearth, despite her fear of losing what she loves the most. All begins so nicely flowing along like an unhindered calm stream, I saw the first chapters as an introduction to the daily life of mystical Sleepy Hollow. Around that time the phrase Where is this story leading me to? " never left me. With every page, it got more obvious that something was coming up very soon but I didn’t expect it to be so chilling. There are some chapters in which I felt the cold running down my spine, so mesmerized that I couldn’t stop reading. That’s in my opinion exactly what horror and fantasy fans are looking for. And for others, those bloody chapters might be too much to bear. I can’t say that Horseman and the film Sleepy Hollow are closely connected. People who have seen the film might recognize names and places, but that’s all. I see this novel as a new interpretation of a legend, a masterfully implemented fantasy horror tale with a little bit of everything in between.

Das jedenfalls glaubt Ben Van Brunt, der Enkel des legendären Brom Bones, dem Farmer aus Sleepy Hollow. Dreißig Jahre sind vergangen, seitdem der Reiter angeblich den Schulmeister Ichabod Crane aus dem Dorf vertrieben hat - und seitdem hat sich nichts geändert. Bis eines Tages eine Leiche im Wald gefunden wird - ohne Kopf. Doch die Wälder von Sleepy Hollow beheimaten noch schlimmere Dinge als kopflose Reiter… Wer das perfekte Herbstbuch voller düsterer Wälder und geflüsterter Geschichten und einem Hauch von Grusel sucht, der wird hier fündig. Christina Henry entführt uns, an der Seite des jungen Ben -auf der Schwelle zwischen Kindheit und Erwachsensein-, in eine atmosphärische Welt, in der nicht alles mit rechten Dingen zugeht, in der sich Magie in den Bäumen versteckt und in der der Wald deinen Namen kennt. Es hat einen Hauch von gruseligem Setting, ein paar nicht so leckere Szenen und eine Handvoll Monster, aber ausgewachsenen Horror findet man hier nicht. Muss auch gar nicht sein! Bens Geschichte begeistert mit einem undefinierbaren, mysteriösen Gefühl, das sich bis zum Ende nicht legt, mit Spannung und einem flotten, fesselnden Schreibstil. Auch mit einem Protagonisten, der nicht so recht in eine Schublade passt, noch Einiges lernen muss und ein absolut liebenswerter Dickkopf ist. Nach ungefähr drei Vierteln der Handlung stolpert die Geschichte ein bisschen über ihre eigenen Füße, es gibt einen überraschenden Zeitsprung und kurz das Gefühl, dass die Handlung vorbei ist, dann bleibt es ein paar Seiten lang ziemlich ruhig und zum Schluss kommt alles Schlag auf Schlag. Das wäre aber auch mein einziger Kritikpunkt, ansonsten war die Geschichte ein wilder Ritt mit einem sehr verdienten Ende. Wer die originale Legende von Sleepy Hollow nicht kennt, hat keine Nachteile beim Lesen, man sollte allerdings auf keinen Fall vom Sleepy Hollow Film ausgehen, der passt gar nicht dazu. Christina Henrys Geschichte ist etwas Eigenes, wie eine weitere düstere Sage aus Wäldern, in denen die Bäume zu dicht stehen und der Wind nach kalten Herbstabenden riecht.
