Quite disturbing

Bewertung am 17.07.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2542485

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

3,5/5 This book dealt with many serious topics like verbal and sexual abuse + victim blaming, suicide, murder, cannibalism, incest, pedophilia. A trigger warning would have been nice. Natsuki feels like an outsider and is confronted with so much neglect, pain and abuse during her childhood that she dissociates from these situations and imagines she must be a literal alien coming from another planet. Her ability to dissociate (leaving her body + talking to her plushie) becomes her literal super power. This very strange idea is supported by her cousin Yuu and her later husband encouraging her in her beliefs. During her asexual marriage, societal pressure to procreate and live a happy married life is a main topic. This form of social criticism was also addressed in 'convenience store woman'. However, in this novel, the criticism is executed in more detail and more drastic due to the alien theory. The end of the book was so over the top. I'm not sure whether the character must have dreamt that ending because of its very very very disturbing nature. Even though this book was deeply disturbing, I could not stop reading it due to the short and sarcastic writing style. I kept wondering what crazy thing is going to happen now. I could also not help but feel sympathy for Natsuki despite her weird alien theory because of the way her environment and especially her mother treated her. I cannot decide whether I found it good or bad and whether I would recommend reading it.

Sozialkritik, die auf einzigartige und verstörende Weise dargestellt wird. Man denkt, es ist schon schlimm und dann wird noch einer oben drauf gelegt. Man weiß nie, was als nächstes passiert. Allerdings gibt es keine Warnung für Kindesmissbrauch und andere Dinge

A memorable expierence!

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

An astonishing novel by one of Japans unconvential and offbeat-minds in the modern litrature! The outrageous, grotesque and weird plot will leave you speechless. I loved reading this book!
