THE TIKTOK SENSATION

'Riveting, heart-wrenching and full of Old Hollywood glamour' BuzzFeed

'This wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet and her tumultuous Tinseltown journey comes with unexpected twists and the most satisfying of drama' PopSugar

From the author of Daisy Jones & The Six in which a legendary film actress reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the '80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
is a mesmerizing journey through the splendour of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means and what it costs to face the truth.

one of my all time favourites

Jen aus Bielefeld am 14.01.2022

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

This book took me into its claws and still hasn't let me go completely. It warmed my heart and shattered it into a million pieces at the same time. It gave comfort, showed the importance of friendship, while depicting that true love does not always come easy. The narrative is on a meta level in this book as well; Evelyn Hugo is giving interviews for her biography. So we see directly how her story impacts the interviewer, how it intertwines with the interviewer's life, while we are feeling the impact her story has on us as well. A masterpiece that I will not be able to forget for a long time.

A highlight you shouldn't miss!

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

"The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo" is an astonishing, touching, incredibly addictive and amazingly written historical fiction novel about unconditional love, passion, power, guilt and loss, as well as the shocking and toxic reality behind fame and old Hollywood's glamour. Taylor Jenkins Reid is, without doubt, one of my favourite authors of all time, as she addresses important topics so directly and manages to truly picture the rawest of emotions, including glorious highs on the one hand but also sickening lows on the other. With Evelyn Hugo, a seemingly perfect Hollywood starlet on her way to rule the world, she introduces us to a complex character so unbelievably strong, smart and outstanding but also just as flawed and broken. Her bittersweet, tragic and twisted story moved me to the bottom of my heart. It kept me awake, laughing and crying, left me feeling uneasy, thinking about what really matters in life and wondering how thin the line between right and wrong really is. All I can say is: Give it a read, it's absolutely worth it!

An amazing read!

Bewertet: eBook (ePUB)

Monique Grant, an unknown magazine reporter cannot believe it. She was chosen to interview Hollywoods aging icon Evelyn Hugo. After keeping her private life all to herself, Evelyn decides to open up about her former relationships and about how her incredible career started. I truly have to say that this book will be one of my all time favourites! Honestly, I had my doubts about it at the beginning, solely because of Hollywood as the setting and the history of becoming an actress, which I thought wasn´t for me. But oh boy, was I wrong! The way this story was created having Evelyn reminiscing about her seven husbands and as a reader witnessing her story right from the start and also having Monique and present time Evelyn discussing everything that Evelyn just told, got me captivated right from the beginning. It was just interesting to get an insight into Hollywood in the 1950´s and to experience the stuggles of a woman who wants to establish her career in a men´s world. It was amazing to see such diversity in this book, talking about feminism, abusive relationships, abortions and bisexuality. Additionally, we have amazing characters that are everything but flat. Evelyn has such a versatile personality that you cannot quite say if you love or hate her. As so with Monique. Her development throughout the story and her growing connection to Evelyn were as fascinating as Evelyns story.. I highly recommend this story if you want to read about a strong woman who does not give up until the very end.
